11/09/2024 UPDATE:
As per our discussion last week, I’m updating this proposal. An ASBL/VZW seems perfectly fine for now and compatible with a DAO approach of working.
We can take it incrementally and build out a governance system on top of an ASBL. I’m in talks with an old acquaintance from Brussels who deals with non-profits and hopefully would be able to give good advice.
Improvements:
- Separate the Open Source project and technology from the fiscal host
- It is easier to ask for subsidies as a Coop (I was told this, can someone verify that this is true?)
- On a legal level, match voting power with decision making
- App Store and Play Store accounts under our name
- Other online services that we need as well (Stripe, AWS, etc…)
Issues:
- We share bank accounts with Citizen Spring and all the projects it fiscally hosts
- This means that we also share the VAT tab with the other projects (another project can bring in grants without generating VAT and purchase with VAT)
- Admin overhead of splitting funds
- We cannot hire someone, Citizen Spring has to hire someone
- Another project could potentially create legal issues that affect Citizen Wallet
- We don’t have our own entity to match our branding and our vision
